Surroundings

Mórahalom is a Hild Prize-winning town in Csongrád-Csanád county, the centre of the Mórahalom district.

Position

It is located about 20 kilometres west of Szeged, right next to the southern (Serbian) border. The neighbouring settlements are Zákányszék to the north, Domaszék to the east, Röszke to the south-east, Ásotthalom to the west, and Ruzsa to the north-west; to the south it is bordered by the outlying areas of Horgos in Vojvodina. Its administrative territory covers an area of 8314 ha.

How to get there:

The main road access route is the main road 55, which can be reached from Szeged and Baja. The main road used to pass through the centre of the town, but now it bypasses the built-up area from the north, the old route being now numbered 5514. It is connected to Bordány and Zákányszék by road 5432, to Röszke and the main road 5 by road 5512 and to the southern outskirts of Ásotthalom by road 5511.
There is no railway line.

The utilities network in the city centre is well developed. Drinking water, gas, electricity and sewage networks are almost 100% complete, and 80% of the road network is paved. The length of the cycle paths in the urban area is close to 10 km, while in the rural area it is 27 km. The town is connected to the neighbouring villages of Ásotthalom, Domaszék, Röszke, Zákányszék by a safe cycle path, and there is also a cycle path from Mórahalom to Baja. In order to promote cycling tourism, bicycle rental is also available, and electric bicycles can now be rented at the town's tourist office.

The tradition of tourism in Mórahalom is based on the nationally certified St. Elisabeth Mórahalm Spa, located in the town centre. The spa has four types of certified thermal waters (Árpád, Erzsébet, Szent László and Mátyás). The medicinal water baths are used for the treatment of gynaecological disorders, arthritic and inflammatory joint diseases, spinal disorders and muscular rheumatism, making the spa the 'knee and shoulder centre' of the region.

The largest park in the city is located next to the spa. Surrounded by deciduous trees and flowerbeds, it is a beautiful and tidy environment with walkways and benches, as well as statues and monuments commemorating our historic events.
The four-star superior Hotel Colosseum Wellness and Conference Hotel opened in 2011 and the three-star Elixir Medical Wellness Hotel in 2015.

A tourist attraction on the outskirts of the town is the Nagyszéksós Lake, where there is a buffalo reserve. In Hungary, buffaloes have been bred since the 16th century and in 1911 there were 155,000 buffaloes in the country, but twenty-five years later there were only 7,000. Today the Hungarian population is estimated at a few hundred, most of them living in national parks.

The number of buffalo guillemots living in the area of the Nagyszéksós Buffalo Reserve is constantly increasing, and they play an important role in maintaining and shaping the original natural environment. At present, some of the buffaloes of the Mórahalmi buffalo reserve, which consists of more than 150 buffaloes, have been translocated to the new reserve area at Tanaszi Hill.

Building on today's farmhouse lifestyle, "farmhouse tourism" has also become increasingly popular with both domestic and foreign visitors.
